Tabs in a second row: Vivaldi also brings them to Apple mobile devices
A feature already known from macOS and Windows is now also available for iOS and iPadOS. Switching from Safari has also been simplified.

The Norwegian provider Vivaldi is expanding the features of the mobile version of its browser of the same name. With version 7.9, both the iPhone version and the iPad variant receive improved tab management. Users can now arrange them not only in one row, but in two – a transfer from the desktop version, as Vivaldi announced. Practically, this means that tab groups are displayed in the form of so-called two-level tab stacks if the users wish. Since the iPhone is usually used in portrait mode, this can be useful because it requires less swiping. The default view for tab stacks, called Accordion, remains, and it is possible to switch between both variants as desired in the settings.
When one tab bar is not enough
Tab stacks, which can be placed at the top and bottom of the screen, have long been considered a “signature” feature of Vivaldi on the desktop and bring more order to the browser, especially with larger tab collections. The approach is then more organized than the tab control in Apple's Safari, for example. New tab stacks can be created by long-pressing the “New Tab” button. The feature has already been available on Android for several years.
Another innovation is the daily changing background images for the Vivaldi start page (Start Page). Alternatively, you can set the wallpaper yourself. According to Vivaldi, it should also be possible to synchronize the browser background image with the iPhone wallpaper (on the iOS home screen). However, we initially couldn't find the corresponding function.

Import from Safari for a faster switch
Vivaldi also hopes for more users to switch from Apple's Safari. For this purpose, there is now a new import function, which also appears when the browser is launched for the first time. Vivaldi can, similar to what is known from Chrome, facilitate the transfer of passwords, bookmarks, history, and even stored payment information. The function is also available via the settings and should only cost a few clicks.
The Norwegian browser is free. Vivaldi earns its money with search and e-commerce deals, as well as through a partnership with Proton. Apple is being urged in the EU and elsewhere to make alternative browsers more easily (and fully) accessible.
