At least 600 Euros: Sony increases Playstation 5 price for the third time
Playstation 5 to become more expensive due to economic pressure, Sony announces. It is already the third price increase since its introduction.

Sony is making the Playstation 5 even pricier: In a blog post, Sony announces new prices for its game console, which will cost at least 600 Euros in the future. It is already the third price increase since the PS5 generation was launched in autumn 2020.
“With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally,” writes Sony's Vice President of Marketing Isabelle Tomatis in a blog post. The price increase is a necessary step to continue to offer “innovative and high-quality gaming experiences.”
For a normal Playstation 5, Sony will in future recommend a price of 650 Euros – one hundred Euros more than before and 150 Euros more than at the start of sales. It originally came onto the market at a price of 500 Euros. For the Digital Edition of the PS5, Sony will in future charge 600 Euros. That is 200 Euros or 50 percent more than in 2020 at the market launch.
The reason is likely to be the ongoing storage crisis. Both DRAM, in the form of GDDR6 memory in the PS5 consoles, and NAND flash chips for SSDs have become many times pricier recently.
PS5 Pro and Playstation Portal also become more expensive
The Playstation 5 Pro will be more expensive for the first time after its release at the end of 2024: it will cost 900 instead of 800 Euros in the future. The streaming console Playstation Portal will only become slightly pricier: Sony will charge 250 instead of the previous 220 Euros. All new prices are valid from April 2nd.
Sony already adjusted the prices of the Playstation just a year ago: At that time, the recommended price for the digital version of the PS5 without a drive only increased by 50 Euros. Sony already implemented the first price increase in August 2022, less than two years after the console's release. At that time, the prices for the PS5 with and without a drive each increased by 50 Euros.

The actual prices of the consoles may differ from the recommended price. At several retailers, the Playstation consoles (starting from 519 €) are currently still significantly below Sony's RRP. However, it is likely that street prices for the console will also rise after April 2nd.
In addition to Sony, Microsoft has also increased the prices of its game consoles: In May of last year, Microsoft added 50 Euros to the recommended prices of the Xbox Series X and Series S.
