Vision Pro successor could have half the pixel density

So far, Apple's headset is still very expensive, which is mainly due to the high-quality screens. New entry-level glasses could reduce this.

According to new reports from the supply chain, Apple is planning to significantly reduce the resolution of a new version of the Vision Pro. The new model will be aimed at entry-level users [1] and will be considerably cheaper than the current minimum price of 3999 euros according to Apple's price list.

The Korean trade journal The Elec writes that Apple has already received demonstration OLED panels from the Japanese supplier JDI , which have around 1500 ppi (pixels per inch) [2]. This would more than halve the pixel density, which is currently said to be 3391 ppi. The iPhone manufacturer had previously requested samples from Samsung Display, which were supposed to achieve 1700 ppi. JDI uses processes that the current micro OLED supplier Sony already uses in the Vision Pro. The new displays will use the OLED-on-silicon process (OLEDoS), according to reports.

Inquiries are also said to have been made to Apple's second important display supplier from South Korea, LG Display. Here too, the "Request for Information" (RFI), which should lead to demo panels, mentions resolutions of around 1700 ppi. With this pixel density, Apple hopes to achieve displays of sufficient quality at significantly lower purchase prices for the components. For comparison: The Quest 3 from Meta currently has 1218 ppi, which is significantly lower.

The electronics magazine DigiTimes, which is published in Taiwan, has also heard that Apple is interested in 1500 ppi OLEDs. The RFIs were already sent to suppliers in the first half of the year [3]. Samsung Display is said to be able to achieve around 1500 ppi with its glass-core substrate process, and a production line for this is reportedly ready, even if the possible quantities are still unclear.

What it will mean in practice to install a cheaper display in a "Vision" (without Pro) is still unclear. However, the price could possibly fall below 2000 euros –, at least that is Apple's hope. At the moment, the Vision Pro is priced in a range that is primarily aimed at professionals – and people who want the best screens currently available, including the corresponding hardware. Meta is going in the other direction and has just announced the Quest 3S, an even cheaper model than the Quest 3 [4].
