Google has equipped Gemini with a new import function for memories and past conversations with other AI chatbots like ChatGPT. Under the motto “Make the Switch,” this is intended to facilitate the transition from one artificial intelligence to another. This is because users no longer have to re-teach Gemini what other chatbots already know about the user and their preferences. However, this import function is not yet available in Germany.
ChatGPT is one of the most popular AI chatbots and climbed to the top of the App Store charts in 2025 as the most downloaded iPhone app, including in Germany. However, at the end of the year, Google Gemini was suddenly close on the heels of the ChatGPT app and already ranked twelfth for the year among the nearly two million programs listed in the App Store. Both chatbots obviate the need for lengthy Google searches, with ChatGPT standing out in Apple integration, as the comparison of ChatGPT and Gemini shows.
Gemini entry via data transfer
To convince users of the capabilities of its AI, Google is now making it easier to switch from ChatGPT or other AI chatbots to Gemini. This is because the AI models used so far learn about users' plans and preferences through the queries and searches conducted with them. When using another chatbot, Gemini does not know, for example, whether the user is a vegetarian and might recommend unsuitable restaurants. Such weaknesses can be avoided with Google's new import function.

Instead of having to explain everything to Gemini anew, memories from other chatbots can simply be transferred to the Google AI. To this end, the data company has added a new import function within Gemini's settings. It recommends a specific instruction that the user should give to the chatbot they have been using so far to retrieve a summary of its memories. The response given should then be transferred to Gemini so that Google's AI model can analyze and save it for future chats.

To provide Gemini with even more detailed information about itself, users can also transfer chat histories from the chatbot they have been using to Gemini. ChatGPT & Co. can save these as a zip file, which can in turn be uploaded to Gemini. However, this file must not exceed 5 GByte in size. With this chat history, previous conversations with the previous AI chatbot can be continued directly in Gemini, Google writes.
However, this import function cannot be accessed in Germany yet, although Google does not specify any regional restrictions. In other countries, such as Taiwan, the corresponding information is available. It is unclear when Google will bring the import function for Gemini to Germany as well.
