Apple officially buries Mac Pro – no successor planned
Apple has commented on the fate of the Mac Pro for the first time. The workstation, which got stuck with the M2 Ultra, will not be revived.

After a long period of suffering (for customers) and silence, Apple has apparently decided to finally bury the Mac Pro. In a statement to the Apple blog 9to5Mac, the company confirmed that the device in its current variant with the completely outdated M2 Ultra chip will no longer be available. But it doesn't stop there: it has been confirmed that there are “no plans” to bring new models (“future Mac Pro hardware,” according to 9to5Mac) to market. In fact, the Mac Pro has already disappeared from Apple's website, including the German one. If you call up the old URL, you land on the Mac overview page.
M5 Ultra and M5 Extreme
The Mac Pro was last updated in the summer of 2023, almost three years ago. Professional customers then waited for Apple to update the workstation again. But the M3 Ultra, which Apple installed in the Mac Studio in spring 2025 (alternatively with the M4 Max), never made it to the Mac Pro. Meanwhile, it was rumored that the Mac Pro could get a not-yet-existent “M5 Ultra” – or a quad chip called “Extreme,” which combines two Ultra units. But that won't happen now.
Lately, only a few customers would have purchased the Mac Pro. Prices remained well over 5000 euros and could easily reach tens of thousands. A configuration with 64 GB of RAM and 1 TB of SSD currently still has a market price of over 7500 euros. In addition to the tower variant, the Mac Pro was also offered in a rack version.

No graphics cards supported
With the transition to Apple Silicon with the M2 Ultra, the question of the Mac Pro's purpose had become increasingly relevant. While the workstation allowed the installation of audio and video expansion cards, SSD boards, and hard drives, Apple Silicon does not support external graphics cards. This meant that central use cases of the old Intel-based Mac Pro, which Apple had equipped with a new design in 2019, were no longer possible. It remains unclear what will happen after the Mac Pro. Many professionals are now relying on the compact Mac Studio, which, however, offers no internal expansion options (except for SSD modules from third-party providers).
In addition to the Mac Pro itself, Apple is also discontinuing the accessories that have repeatedly caused amusement in recent years, including the wheels, initially almost 500 euros (current Amazon price: 850 euros), which hobbyists also installed in skateboards. If you're looking for a souvenir bargain, Mac Pro feet are currently being sold on Amazon at a bargain price of under 180 euros.
