Anthropic spins off MCP and gifts it to the Linux Foundation

Anthropic hands over MCP to the newly founded Agentic AI Foundation. This is intended to form a neutral and open foundation for AI projects.
The Linux Foundation has announced the formation of the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), under which AI projects from the open-source world are to be gathered. The Model Context Protocol (MCP) from Anthropic, the goose platform from Block, and the Agents.md specification from OpenAI are making their debut.
The goal of the AAIF [1] is to provide an independent and open foundation for agent-based AI projects, ensuring that they can be developed transparently, stably, and cooperatively. The Linux Foundation sees itself as a neutral home for AI infrastructure "that the world can rely on."
Main members of the AAIF [2] are Amazon Web Services, Anthropic, Block, Bloomberg, Cloudflare, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI. Many other prominent names are joining, such as Docker, Hugging Face, IBM, JetBrains, Oracle, Snowflake, Suse, and Kubermatic.
Anthropic intends to continue investing
Anthropic justifies the handover [3] of MCP to the AAIF by promoting innovation in the agent-based AI ecosystem. The move is intended to ensure that "these foundational technologies remain neutral, open, and community-driven."
Furthermore, Anthropic assures that it will continue to invest in the growth of MCP. The Governance Model [4] is to remain in effect, and the role of the maintainers will be preserved.
